The Water Question I Still Haven’t Fully Settled

Last Tuesday I stood at the sink for a full minute with a glass of water in my hand, just staring at it, trying to decide if drinking it before a run was going to help or just slosh around uncomfortably for the first mile. This is a decision I make almost every morning and I still don’t have a fixed answer. Some days I drink half a glass. Some days I drink nothing at all and just go. I’ve never landed on a rule, and the longer I’ve run before eating anything, the more I’ve realized the water question is its own separate thing entirely, tangled up with the empty stomach but not the same issue.

The Mornings I Drink Nothing

Plenty of mornings I walk straight from my bed to my shoes and out the door without touching the tap at all. On those mornings I don’t think about my stomach or my throat until I’m two or three streets in, and honestly most of the time I don’t notice anything missing. I used to assume that going out completely dry, no food and no water, would leave me thick headed or slow to start. It hasn’t, at least not in any way I can point to specifically. My mouth gets a little dry by the halfway point, and that’s about the extent of it. I’ve done full runs this way more times than I can count at this point, and it’s become the version of the morning that requires the least thought, which on a lot of days is the whole appeal.

The Mornings I Drink Water First

Other mornings, usually when I’ve woken up already feeling a bit parched or when the air outside is dry, I’ll drink a small amount of water standing at the counter before I leave. It’s rarely more than half a glass. On these mornings the run feels roughly the same as the dry ones, maybe slightly more comfortable in my throat for the first few minutes. I can’t say it changes anything about my legs or my energy, and I want to be careful not to claim it does. It’s more of a comfort choice than anything I could defend with a reason. Some mornings my body just seems to want it, and I’ve learned to listen to that small preference rather than overthink it into a rule I have to follow every day.

The Sloshing Problem

I learned the hard way that there’s a real difference between a small amount of water and a full glass right before heading out. One morning, feeling unusually thirsty, I drank almost a full glass in one go and then started running within a few minutes. I could feel it moving in my stomach for the entire first mile, an actual physical sloshing sensation that was distracting and a little uncomfortable, though never painful. I misjudged that one badly. I’m not passing on a rule about timing here because I genuinely don’t know what the right gap would be for anyone else, or even for me on a different day. I just know that morning taught me to drink less, or drink earlier, or sometimes just skip it.

Weather Changes Everything

In warmer stretches I notice I reach for water more often before heading out, almost without deciding to. In cooler months, especially the darker ones, I go dry far more often and don’t think twice about it. I don’t have a clean explanation for this pattern beyond the obvious one, that warm air makes thirst show up earlier in the day for me. It’s not a strategy I’ve built, just something I’ve noticed looking back at a string of mornings. Some weeks I’ll drink water five days running and then go two weeks without touching a glass before a run at all, and neither stretch feels wrong while I’m in it.

What Dev Does Differently

Dev drinks a full glass of water before basically every run he does, rain or shine, hot or cold, and has told me he feels off if he skips it. Watching him do this consistently while I flip back and forth has been a useful reminder that there’s no single right answer sitting out there waiting to be discovered. His stomach and mine just want different things, or maybe neither of us actually knows what our stomachs want and we’re both just repeating whatever habit stuck first. I don’t have a way to settle that question and I’ve stopped trying to.

Where I’ve Landed, Sort Of

If I’m honest, I still decide this one morning by morning, sometimes glass in hand at the sink the way I was last Tuesday. I’m not going to pretend I’ve found the right formula, because I don’t think there is one, at least not one that applies beyond my own kitchen. This is just what I’ve noticed about my own body over a few years of paying loose attention to it, and I’d rather admit the inconsistency than dress it up as a method.

Why I Stopped Looking For A Rule

For a while I actually tried to track this, jotting down on my phone whether I’d had water or not before a run and how the run felt afterward, thinking a pattern would eventually show up if I paid close enough attention. It never did. Weeks of notes and I couldn’t find anything reliable connecting how much water I drank beforehand to how the run actually went. Some of my best runs came after a full glass. Some of my best runs came after nothing at all. Eventually I deleted the notes and decided the whole exercise had been a waste of a few weeks, mostly useful for teaching me that not everything needs to be tracked to be understood. Some mornings you just drink the water or you don’t, and either way you go run.
